Traditional Easter Hot Cross Buns Recipe: A Classic Easter Favourite

Few Easter treats are as recognizable as hot cross buns.

With their soft texture, warm spices, sweet raisins, and traditional icing cross, these buns have been associated with Easter celebrations for centuries.

In this episode of Happy Home Kitchen, Chef Makeda shows us how to make homemade hot cross buns that fill the kitchen with the comforting aroma of cinnamon and freshly baked bread.

Whether enjoyed warm from the oven or served alongside tea, hot cross buns are a timeless Easter tradition.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • ¾ cup milk

  • 2½ teaspoons dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ½ tablespoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 eggs

  • 5 tablespoons softened butter

  • Raisins

For the Glaze

  • 3 tablespoons sugar syrup

For the Icing Cross

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 3 tablespoons milk

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a mixing bowl combine:

  • ¾ cup milk

  • 2½ teaspoons dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Whisk gently and allow the mixture to sit for about five minutes until the yeast becomes slightly foamy.

This step helps activate the yeast and prepares it for a successful rise.

Step 2: Make the Dough

Add:

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ½ tablespoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 eggs

  • 5 tablespoons softened butter

Mix until the dough begins to come together.

Add the raisins and continue mixing until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.

Knead for approximately five minutes until the dough becomes smooth, soft, and elastic.

A properly kneaded dough helps create light, fluffy buns.

The Easter Tradition Behind Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns have been connected to Easter celebrations for centuries.

The cross on top traditionally symbolizes the crucifixion, while the sweet, spiced bread has become a seasonal favourite enjoyed throughout Easter weekend.

For many families, the smell of cinnamon and warm dough baking in the oven signals the arrival of Easter just as much as family gatherings and holiday meals.

It's one of those recipes that naturally brings everyone into the kitchen.

Step 4: First Rise

Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl and cover it.

Allow it to rise for approximately two hours or until it doubles in size.

This resting period develops both texture and flavour.

Step 5: Shape the Buns

Divide the dough into twelve equal portions.

Shape each piece into a smooth round ball.

Try to keep the sizes as even as possible so they bake uniformly.

Step 6: Second Rise

Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.

Cover lightly and allow them to rise again for approximately one hour.

The buns should become noticeably larger and softer.

Step 7: Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake for 20–25 minutes until the tops are beautifully golden brown.

The kitchen should now be filled with the unmistakable aroma of Easter baking.

Step 8: Glaze

Brush the warm buns with:

  • 3 tablespoons sugar syrup

The glaze adds shine and a touch of sweetness.

Allow the buns to cool for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 9: Make the Icing

In a small bowl combine:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 3 tablespoons milk

Mix until smooth and lump-free.

The icing should be thick enough to pipe while still flowing easily.

Step 10: Finish the Traditional Cross

Pipe the icing across the tops of the buns to create the traditional cross design.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

Why Hot Cross Buns Remain an Easter Favourite

Hot cross buns continue to be popular because they combine simple ingredients with meaningful tradition.

The warm spices, sweet raisins, and soft texture make them comforting and familiar, while the traditional cross connects them to Easter celebrations around the world.

Whether served at breakfast, enjoyed with afternoon tea, or shared with family after Easter lunch, they remain one of the season's most beloved treats.
